BEST EVER OF ITS TYPE Oct 16, 2009 The first "modern" art history series and still the very best. It is often imitated, never equalled. And now in remastered DVD form, it is even BETTER. Amazing. Truly a pinnacle. Perfection on earth does exist. And here it is.
Civilization Complete Oct 15, 2009 This beautifully filmed series covers "western" or "European" civilization from Ancient Rome up to the 20th century. In spite of (or sometimes because of) Kenneth Clark's quirky opinions on what is or is not civilized, to see the whole story of art, architecture, literature, culture, religion, and sometimes engineering (and how they interact) in one great 13-hour sweep of history is fascinating. If you liked "The Ascent of Man" or "Connections" you will probably like this.
Excellent Series Sep 28, 2009 This is a wonderful, brief history told through the perspective of a very insightful writer.

US region / civilisation/ Sep 14, 2009 The series is execellent. Unfortunately, the copy that was mailed to me (I live in Europe) had the wrong REGION. So, I cannot play it in my DVD player. I reckon that AMAZON should have warned me, or should have sent the correct REGION copy.

Where is Spain? Sep 09, 2009 Spain was, during the Middle Ages, a place where Muslims, Jews and Christians coexisted. While in England, Jews were expelled in 1290, Spain gave them the possibility of conversion in 1478. Spain gave economic support to Christopher Columbus to discover and christianize new lands in 1492. Juan de la Cosa traced the first world map including the new territories of America in 1500. However, Martin Waldseemuller made another one in 1507 naming these territories America after Americo Vespucio. Why Vespucio and not De la Cosa? Spanish professionals have been frequently ignored throughout history. Spaniards kept an Empire that dominated all of the American continent from the south of the US to the Southern Cone and a large part of Europe. Spain had a golden age of art giving artists such as Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, Miguel de Cervantes, Velázquez or Murillo. However, that is not enough to include at least one chapter on Spain. Thank you BBC for sponsoring the Black Legend.
